Why men are associated with meat in the first place
When explaining why men are directed toward meat, we have to start at the beginning. GenderFoodCulture.com student writes, in their article "Why Men Barbecue", "According to at least one academician, the hunting and cooking of the captured game caught by males during man’s evolutionary development may have contributed to the emergence of gender based instincts that explain why men like to barbecue meat on the grill." Men back in cavemen days were taught that they themselves were responsible for cooking meat out on the fire. Even in the days of the Wild West, men grilled meat in the outdoors. The student writer then explains the popularity rise during postwar USA, "The barbecue embodied the “good life” of America and ran counter the deprivations that communism represented." Meat was America's way of being American. After women had entered the work force, men had to assert their dominance. They proved they were still the leaders of the house by making themselves responsible for the meat cooking which is the center of the meal. Women were primarily responsible for the "easy" sections of the meal such as salad preparation.
